a few minutes ago while i was working on my computer next to the window so i could kind of watch the kids play outside, lula ran in to announce, "diesel pooped in the yard!" oh dear heavens!
why, you may ask, did i find my two year old naked in the backyard with a log of poop happily resting by his foot? this is a mystery parents have yet to solve. and though we'll never really know why these things occur, we do know what it means: it's time for potty training!
ugh! let me tell you why potty training is NOT on my agenda right now. my brother, along with his gracious wife and darling four children, are currently living with us for a while. we have two households worth of furniture in our house and enough toddler energy to power a small city.
we are also moving in three weeks. so i'm trying to pack up boxes while lula follows me around asking where this and that is and diesel has meltdowns because i already packed his guitar.
need i go on to make my case? I'M not ready, but apparently diesel is. again, ugh!!! (oh...did i mention that lula joined her brother by peeing in the backyard? animals, people! they're little animals! thank goodness the cousins weren't around to join in!)
i've decided to start calling mondays "monday meltdown madness". for some reason, it seems like mondays and fridays are the worst days of the week for us. and by that i mean the kids are so much crankier and difficult on those days. can anyone relate? i mean, i guess i'm pretty tired and grumpy on those days too. i just know how to control myself a little better...a little!
but the littles! oh my word! this past monday was just a series of miserable events that were so random there was no way to foresee the meltdowns on the horizon. for example, lula and diesel were playing outside and there were some flies buzzing around. so lula came inside to grab the fly swatter. she took it back out and ended up just throwing it around for fun, but she was throwing it off the porch and onto the driveway where the kids are not allowed to go without supervision.
so i went out to see what was going on. lula had just thrown the swatter and somehow it miraculously landed directly under the car where no one could reach it. so i grabbed my keys to move the car to get the swatter. it literally took three seconds, but for some reason it started a very unhappy meltdown. i guess diesel wanted to help me move the car which he didn't even know i was doing two seconds earlier. he started screaming and ended up laying down in the middle of the driveway with big crocodile tears streaming down his face.
i mean...i don't even know! so the next thirty minutes was just one sob fest after another. i always feel a little on edge with diesel these days because i never know what's going to set him off and once he's set off how long it's going to last. he's SO unpredictable. i love that little guy, but man he wears me out!
anyway, the whole point is that these scenes tend to happen in abundance on mondays and fridays. obviously everyone is tired from the week and then tired from the chaotic weekends. just wondering if anyone can relate?
yep, i'm still posting about our trip to maryland! we did so much there and haven't done much since. so...
on our second day at the ocean, we walked over to layton's for a yummy breakfast. they had typical breakfast food, but their most amazing feature was their donuts. now we have an amazing local donut place here which i've talked about before, but these donuts were beyond amazing. i mean melt in your mouth amazing. we've been talking about them ever since!
after layton's we took a little bike ride on a four person surrey. the kids got to ride up front, and they loved it! we sang "wheels on the bus" really loud and embarrassed jay to death. i've also decided that it would be really fun to buy one of these and ride it around out neighborhood. wouldn't that be hilarious?! jay was again...embarrassed at the idea. it was a really good workout though!
when it was about time for lunch, we changed, packed up our stuff so we could check out of the hotel, and headed down the boardwalk for some pizza. it was a little further than i thought and the kids fell asleep on the way there.
they slept through most of lunch. lula finally woke up and ate a little. diesel finally woke up near the end, but was still so tired that he didn't want to eat. i put him on my lap to color, but when i set him down to go to the bathroom, the biggest melt down i've ever seen began and lasted for about the next 30 minutes. it was kind of miserable. i immediately took him out of the restaurant of course and tried to distract him on the boardwalk and the sand, but nothing would work.
finally everyone else came out and i handed him off to jay. i'd been promising lula a henna tattoo which were advertised all over the boardwalk. so we got her a butterfly and flower. she was so proud! meanwhile, diesel was screaming.
at some point he insisted on taking off all his clothes. then jay carried him kicking and screaming along the boardwalk back to the hotel. at some point he realized that diesel wanted a tattoo too, which i had offered him earlier and he had just screamed at. anyway, that's what finally calmed him down!
it was quite a busy trip to the beach, but we had a great time overall. and i'm glad my kids finally got to see the ocean!
my kids have never been to the ocean, which is strange to me since i grew up on the east coast and frequently went on family vacations and day trips to the beach. i was really excited for them to get to go even though we had to drive three hours to ocean city and only stayed one night.
i took a million pictures. yes, actually a million. so you'll have to forgive this post, but when it's a bright sunny day and your kids are happy, it's just hard to not keep snapping!
we arrived around lunch time. so we stopped for a bite to eat first. the weather was perfect... until we got on the sand!
it was REALLY windy and therefore pretty chilly. the water was especially cold. no one was swimming. so we just dipped our toes in and that was about it! it's always overwhelming in a good way to stand on the edge of the water. it's so big and beautiful. it's just amazing.
since lula couldn't really swim in the water, she grew bored pretty quickly and wanted to go swim in the heated pool. so jay took her to the pool while my mom and i relaxed in our chairs on the beach. mom bundled up almost immediately! she gets cold easily.
papa kept diesel entertained with all the sand castle tools. they made several trips to the water to collect water in their buckets, which diesel immediately dumped out when they got back to our spot! for a little guy, it was quite an adventure and he was worn out. he insisted on carrying one of the buckets back and forth even when it was loaded with water. and we weren't very close to the water! he's a tough little guy despite his extreme emotional outbursts!
after a while jay, lula, diesel, and i all went to the indoor pool to play for a while. the kids had floaties on their arms and were able to navigate pretty well with them. this was the first time they'd tried them, and they loved being a little more free in the water. diesel would just leap off the side with no one to catch him! he's a little daredevil!
and that was our time in the water for the day. more adventures at the beach to come!
yesterday we finally arrived home after two long days of travel. the kids were amazing although lula asked if we were there yet about twenty times on our first day of travel! but minus a couple of diesel melt downs (which seem more and more frequent these days!), they did a great job of sitting still for hours on end in the car. they're pretty great kids. very flexible and adaptable.
lula leading diesel into the hotel our first night of travel. she's such a little mother, and i love how close these two are. sometimes lula will lean in close and say, "you're my best buddy." i hope it lasts!
minor tangent... diesel got to sleep in a big bed for the first time in his life since we didn't have our pack n play with us! we played musical beds several times and suffered through a serious melt down, but he actually did pretty good overall. might be time to transition him out of his crib.
we had such a good time at my parents' and we miss them terribly. driving home makes us hyper-aware of just how far away we are from them. but there's nothing like getting home and settling back into your own space. i really love our little house.
we were able to get home at a decent hour and put everything away. jay even mowed the back yard which had literally turned into a jungle in just two weeks. there were vines growing around our soccer goal! it was a little creepy! but when he started mowing, he noticed some movement in the grass. we have a couple of bunnies that frequent our backyard and apparently they decided to have their babies here! so they started hopping around when jay turned on the mower!
obviously he didn't want to accidentally run over them. so he was able to catch two which we put in a box until he finished. the kids watched over them diligently with very stern instructions not to touch them! it was a pretty sweet and cute way to end the evening.
soon after we arrived at nana and papa's, the kids were escorted to the golf course their house sits on to run wild and let loose some energy! they had so much fun just running around that wide, open space. it always makes me laugh to watch kids enter an area where they can run wild and free completely unhindered. an empty house, a large warehouse... doesn't seem to matter as long as they can be completely free. boundaries are good, great actually, but so is a little bit of uninhibited freedom.
(it was getting dark which is why the pictures are so grainy, but it's hard to miss the joy on their faces!)
i confess. i'm guilty. really, really guilty. my kids have been watching a lot of tv lately! i try to limit their intake. i really do. no tv in the morning except on saturdays, and just a little bit in the afternoon. but it seems like it's been a lot more than that. oh well. the uptake is that they are often sitting still enough for me to take some pics of them! ahhh... the silver lining!
here lu and d are watching "candy land"... again! i recently bought them the original version of willy wonka and the chocolate factory at target for $5. they LOVE it! lula calls it "candy land" and always wants me to skip to the part when violet turns into a blueberry. she's fascinated by it. on the other hand, my sensitive soul, mr. d, often sobs over augustus gloop tumbling into the chocolate river! i'm not exaggerating!
not sure if i can explain this one! who can know the mind of a quirky little two year old?! diesel is listening to his heart, drinking milk, and watching baby einstein in his swim trunks. interpret as you will!
if you've been following my blog for a while, you may remember how lula used to organize her toys like this too. it's funny that they both like to do this even though their personalities are very different.
we've started calling him "one man band" since he gathers all of his little instruments around him, turns a song on on his little B microphone, and then tries to play his instruments all at the same time while singing into the microphone. it's hilarious! considering how sweet and sensitive he is, i can see some artist/musician-type future for my little guy.
this little guy is so different from lula! lula who used to play in another room while i worked on my computer and rarely came over to even ask for help if necessary. she's quite a bit more social now, but before she could talk, she was completely independent. it's funny how she's changed. going from very quiet, very busy, and very independent, she now wants to be around us all the time and is constantly chatting. she is still very busy!
little diesel on the other hand has always been much more vocal, but he doesn't like big crowds, would watch tv all day if i let him, and is a little bit of a momma's boy. as you can see from the photos, i was trying to work on my computer and he literally surrounded me with the toys he was playing with. he's a pretty cuddly little guy, which i love!
they're both quirky. lula isn't social at all with unfamiliar people, but diesel is. he'll smile and wave at anybody. but if lula knows you, she'll talk your leg off and wants a constant audience. whereas diesel will be more of a wallflower in a big group of people we know.
who knows! they're interesting little creatures! but i love them both. obviously!
