who plans outdoor festivals in mid-july?! craziness! i guess when it's for a specific cause...such as viewing butterflies...festival planners don't have much of a choice. so because my little four year old loves butterflies, we headed out to a local butterfly festival early saturday morning despite the heat.
luckily we arrived early and were able to go through the butterfly house before lines started forming. lula and diesel were both fascinated with the butterflies and caterpillars and the tiny green eggs lying on leaves. although lula complained that there weren't enough butterflies. the smithsonian's display spoiled her!
after the butterfly house we bought the kids some flavored honey while they watched bees work in a little glass case. they played with bubbles, then headed to the caterpillar display where they could "pet" the various kinds of caterpillars.
after the petting zoo, we passed the face painting table. lula is obsessed with face painting as most kids are. so we got in what seemed like a short line. the problem was there was only one painter taking between 10-15 minutes with each kid. there were at least seven or eight kids in front of us. you do the math!
but being the amazing and unselfish mother that i am (ahem...), i got in line. jay bailed and took diesel to the playground while lula wandered around the nearby booths. and i waited...and waited...and waited. i got a nice little tan though. so, hey, not all was in vain!
while i was waiting, lula wandered over the to the next booth where two very nice ladies slathered her in sunscreen! so spoiled! she also managed to find a little bead bracelet for a dollar at the same booth. score!
after what seemed like an eternity, mainly because it was so hot, i was standing in the sun, and there was a grandmother in front of me whose mission it was to let everyone know she could control her grandchildren while guzzling a liter of soda, we finally made it under the tent and lula was transformed into a beautiful rainbow butterfly! then we high-tailed it out of there and blasted the ac in the car! bliss!
