i'm hosting a small family bbq in a few days for my daughter's second birthday. i decided to do a tropical/summer beach style party. i'm not a fan of theme parties but i do like to incorporate theme elements into a get-together. so for one of my elements, i've decided to serve drinks in actual coconuts. here is how I did it:
tools:
drill or screwdriver (I like to use powertools whenever I can)
coconuts ($1.50/ea. at local grocer's)
tropical drink recipe (search for recipes on allrecipes.com)
cute drinking straws (available at party stores)
measuring cup
funnel or container with a pourable spout
Step 1: turn coconut over to find three "eyes". this is the soft spot of the coconut's shell. using a screwdriver or drill, insert into one of the "eyes" and make a hole. this hole will be for your straw.
step 2: since i'm hosting a child's party, i'm doing a simple 1 cup orange juice & 1 cup pineapple juice mixture. you can find hundreds of tropical drink recipes online (i like to use allrecipes.com). decide which one sounds delicious to you and use it in your coconut!
step 3: pour coconut water out and discard or use it in another recipe. place funnel in coconut "eye" hole that you made earlier (i used a measuring cup that has a pourable lip). slowly pour in drink mixture. after filling all of your coconuts, place on tray and refrigerate until guests arrive.
step 4: garnish your coconut with a flower and a whimsical drinking straw! you now have a beautiful and refreshing summertime drink that your guests will go "nuts" for!
happy hosting,
grace
