i found this great little book called how it all began by janet smalley at salvation army for about 25 cents. it was written in 1932 and apparently is a rare find. it's going for $13.50 on amazon. so...not going to make me a millionaire, but still pretty cool!
more importantly than that are the awesome illustrations throughout the book. they immediately captivated me as i flipped through the lovely pictures in bold colors. the drawings are beautiful too. the monochromatic colors with the bold black make for a very interesting visual effect. i'd love to hang some of these on the wall.
how it all began is an informational book for children about a variety of topics such as heat, electricity, forms of travel, and occupations. it's fun to read the descriptions from the viewpoint of someone living in the 30s. i'm in love with this little book and so glad i picked through that huge pile of books at salvation army!

Wow, beautiful drawings. I've illustrated a few children's books and it is the most fun I've ever had on a project!
