On Saturday, April 16 we threw Lula a lovely little birthday party. Despite the chilly, cloudy weather which forced us to move all of our activities inside, it was a perfect day inside. The guests arrived at 10:30, a couple of them beating Lula who had spent the night at Gramma's house so we could set everything up without her seeing. Lula was SO excited to see her friends waiting for her in the door and laughed. When she came in she immediately said, "hug" and ran up to me and gave me the biggest hug. So sweet considering she really isn't in to such things these days!
When Lula arrived we started the "treasure hunt." There was a string attached to a bag with each child's name on it. They had to follow the string and pick up their treasures which consisted of candy-filled eggs, sunglasses, and other little gifts. Everyone ended up in the back playroom sifting through their treasures.
After that, we ate, getting the kids settled first around their little table. It was adorable to see them all eating together and they were very pleasant. The adults ate standing up in various places. (Our house is so compartmentalized that it's difficult to get everyone in one place together!)
Pork barbecue on Hawaiian rolls
Two kinds of chips
Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
Fresh mixed berries
Cake Pops (Click on link to see my best friends instructions for these)
After eating, I lit a couple of candles in a cookie and we all sang to Lula. She was a little embarrassed, but didn't run away! She had some help blowing out her candles, and then everyone had cookies and cake pops.
Then the main event occurred! After looking at the rental fees, we decided to just buy Lula a bounce house instead. (If anyone wants to borrow it, please feel free! We'd love to share!) The kids were SO excited! Of course we intended to set it up outside, but thankfully had plenty of room inside in the play area. It was so much fun to watch them bounce and slide down the little slide. And because they were busy, the adults were able to chat for a little while. I'm looking forward to setting this up when friends come over so the moms can actually chat for once!
When they seemed to be tiring of bouncing, we opened presents. Lula received so many wonderful things. I'm going to do another post about some of her favorite things in case you need some ideas for presents for a two year old! The kids weren't that interested in this, of course. So we pulled out some of Lula's bigger toys while we opened the gifts.
It was such a lovely day and I think everyone had a great time. I always go overboard (in Jay's mind) with parties, but I really want the person to feel extra special on their special day. I think Lula did.
